They are to date still holds the record as much as 17 times NBA champion (1957, 1959, 1960, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1968, 1969, 1974, 1976, 1981, 1984, 1986 and 2008).

History

Celtics formed in 1946 as one team in the Basketball Association of America, and became part of the NBA after the merger of BAA and the National Basketball League. The team is less successful in the first years, until coach Red Auerbach came. One of the famous players who join the Celtics was Bob Cousy. In addition, later also a rookie named Bill Russell joined in 1956. Russell later became an integral part of the Celtics success. That same year the Celtics advanced to the finals and beat St. Hawks Louis in seven games, this is the first Celtics championship. In 1957, the Celtics returned to challenge the Hawks in the finals and lost in 6 games. But after an additional K.C. Jones, the Celtics started a dynasty that will run for more than a decade.
In 1959, with Russell and Jones, the Celtics won the NBA champions after beating the Minneapolis Lakers. Still trained Auerbach, the Celtics won the next seven championships, making eight in a row. In this time, the Celtics met the Lakers in the finals six times, so that they become mortal enemies. Celtics at Lakers last met 10 times in the final. After the 1966 championship, Auerbach retired as coach but remained as General Manager, still he held until the 1980's. Russell then took over as player-coach. But that year they lost to the Philadelphia 76ers in the Eastern Conference Finals. This aging team that went on to win two championships back in 1968 and 1969, against the Lakers. Russell retired after the 1969 season, ending a dynasty that has won 11 NBA championships. Important players from this period is Sam Jones, John Havlicek, and Tommy Heinsohn.
Beginning 2007/08 season, they recruit from the Minnesota Timberwolves Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen of the Seattle SuperSonics. Along with Paul Pierce, three of them considered various circles will make the Celtics back into a fearsome force in the Eastern Conference even the NBA. This is evident with the success they won the NBA this season after beating the Lakers in 6 NBA Finals Game in 2008.
